Mulching is one of the most important aspects of owning trees according to Your Area arborists.
What is Mulch?
For tree owners, there is a lot of maintenance that can go into keeping trees healthy. Seasonal pruning and fertilization are good habits to get into but one of the most significant steps of raising healthy trees is mulching. Mulching refers to applying inorganic or organic materials around a tree or landscaping feature. The goals of mulching can be simply to add aesthetic appeal to landscaping features but it usually brings with it a myriad of benefits to the surrounding vegetation.
Different Mulch Materials
When it comes to selecting the right mulch, there are many different types to choose from. Some types are rarely used or used only regionally while other types are more traditional. Some of the options for mulches include:
- Inorganic Mulches: Rock or ground-up rubber are common inorganic mulches. The benefit of inorganic mulches is that they last a very long time. The disadvantage of these mulches is that they provide limited benefits other than aesthetics.
- Shredded Grasses: Grass clipping or straw make excellent mulches for gardens or flowerbeds. These products provide nutrients as they break down as well as conserving moisture in the soil. However, they don’t look very pretty.
- Wood Chips or Bark: For trees, tree-sourced mulch is best. Wood mulch comes from a variety of sources that are byproducts of the lumber industry. They add tremendous aesthetic value to spaces as well as maximizing the benefits provided to the surrounding trees and plants.
- Dyed Mulch: In many cases, wood-based mulch is dyed to help enhance the appeal. Dyed mulch comes in a variety of colours and can add a touch of drama to any outdoor space. Additionally, plants will benefit from the mulch just as if it were plain organic mulch.
Benefits of Mulching Around Trees and Landscaping
Mulching is a low-cost and easy way to protect the landscaping and trees around a home or business. Reasons to apply mulch include:
- Improved soil structure as the mulch breaks down
- Mulch acts as a slow-release fertilizer for plants as it degrades
- Suppresses weeds in gardens and flower beds
- Retains and distributes soil moisture
- Protects tree roots
- Gives landscaped spaces a more finished look
Because of the above reasons, mulch should be applied to any outdoor space with vegetation. Mulch is cheap to install and easy to maintain. The positive results of mulching can be seen almost immediately.
How to Properly Apply Mulch
Applying mulch is easy but there are a few pitfalls to avoid. Mulch should be applied in layers 3-4 inches thick depending on the size of the mulch particles. Mulch that contains smaller particles should be applied thinner since it has a tendency to compact more. Compacted mulch can lead to adverse effects on trees and plants. Mulch that has bigger particles can be applied heavier. If refreshing existing mulch, it may be beneficial to fluff the compacted mulch before applying another layer.
Keeping mulch away from the trunks of trees is important to protect them. When mulch sits against a tree trunk it can damage the bark and make the tree susceptible to disease. Additionally, thick mulch around the tree trunk can cause root girdling that inhibits a tree’s growth and can eventually kill it.
