The Christmas Tree: A History
December is in full swing, and that means that Christmas is just a few weeks away! As such, many homeowners and their families are gearing up for one of the most festive times of the year. And what better way to get the house ready for Christmas than by buying a Christmas tree and getting a go on the tree decorations! While homeowners around the country will be doing this, the reality is that not many people know the real history behind the Christmas tree.
There are some different theories about the origin of the Christmas tree, but most signs point to German origins sometime in the Middle Ages. Strasbourg is believed to be the site of the first Christmas tree market, and the first “Christmas tree” is thought to have come from Freiburg, where a group of people decorated a tree with apples, cookies, and tinsel. Later, evergreen firs were used in “Paradise Plays,” and to this day, most Christmas trees are evergreen conifers!
Tree Trimming Trends
In the spirit of talking about Christmas trees, it only makes sense to discuss the latest and greatest in tree trimming trends. To start, it is important to acknowledge that tree trimming is a very common and widely accepted component of proper tree care. From the very beginning with tree planting, homeowners must ensure that they actively look after their trees. This includes employing basic maintenance techniques, ensuring that the trees get enough water, mulching when needed or when it is helpful, and so on.
But back to the main point, proper tree trimming is no exception. In fact, tree trimming is often necessary for ensuring the health of trees. However, there is a big aesthetic component as well, and that is where tree trimming trends come into play! For evergreen trees in particular, which are the type of tree often associated with Christmas trees, there is a very distinct style that is popular.
The primary trend with evergreen trees is to prune them such that it makes it look like the tree is bushier. This gives off the look that the tree is very dense and full, which many consumers love and is often associated with a high-quality Christmas tree. Trimming in early spring is most ideal given that the tree will grow and fill in.
What to do with Trees Post-Christmas
While it is probably sad to think about, the fact of the matter is that Christmas will come and go, and the question will then become: what should homeowners do with their Christmas trees? It seems like a bummer to simply throw the tree away. There must be better uses for them, right?! Here are some ideas:
- Compost – this can allow trees to be reused for mulching and other things
- Convert to firewood – why not put the good wood to use!
- Develop wildlife habitat – putting the tree outside or in the water can help nearby wildlife, like fish or birds
- Donate it! – local wildlife organizations or zoos may be able to use the tree
When in doubt, homeowners can also contact their local tree service to see if arborists can recommend what to do with their Christmas trees. Professionals can also help with tree removal if that is something homeowners are interested in getting help with!
